Q: My son’s Hydroxizine has been delayed and he’s SO itchy without it. What else can I try until it gets here?

• Wet-wrapping maybe??? Or oat-baths?
• Benadryl.
• I agree!
• This might seem a little odd to some people, but in that situation we have given our daughter liquid Benadryl along with liquid ibuprofen with success.
• We use triamcinolone with wet pjs. If that’s not on hand Benadryl and Ibprophen
• Can you put baking soda in his bath? We’ve tried Benadryl and Zyrtec when my son has been itchy when he had his casts. What are you using for cream? Maybe something a little thicker to prevent it from drying/itching at night? We alternate using Hydrocortisone or Triamcinolone but only on bug bites.
• My daughter uses Extra Strength Benadryl itch stopping gel with great success on her itchy days.
• Zyrtec (Cetirizine) and my daughter uses ice packs to help too. I also have made a paste with Aveeno oatmeal bath treatment (powder packets) by adding some water and spreading on the itchy parts and then removing after a bit with a cool wash cloth.
• We use hydrocortisone cream, or pumpkin seed oil
• You can do oat baths as well
• My son uses a lot of coconut oil. He found the most relief from taking Zyrtec in the morning and Singulair before bed.
• We do the same. Zyrtec in morning and singular through his gtube with other night meditations. I just hate seeing him so uncomfortable. Especially with fevers, makes the itching much worse. ??

• This is not going to be useful but I honestly think that antihistamines only work to a certain extent and then they’re useless. Sometimes it's like they only just take the edge off. We use one at night that has a sedative in it too but if she's going to itch nothing seems to make a difference. We're up in the night quite a lot at the moment so she's tired and so am I. She’s also covered in cuts ??

• Advice from the pharmacist: Some people find that they need to rotate the meds. For example, Zyrtec for 3 months, then Claritin, then Allegra. There is an older one called Chlorpheniramine you could add in to the rotation too as long as it’s not contraindicated. Singular is a MAST cell stabilizer so that would stay as a routine bedtime med.
• That’s a good idea. It seems after a while some meds don’t help at all.
• Cyproheptadine is another older antihistamine you could try in the rotation too.
• We use Atarax. It's stronger than Benadryl and lasts longer. It also is use for anxiety. We only give it when it's needed.
• You have to get a script from your doctor

• The antihistamines will take the edge off but some nights when it's really bad, I have made oatmeal paste, rubbed it on the area and after a while used a cool wet wash cloth to wipe it off. I use the Aveeno Oatmeal bath mix and just mix it with water and rub it on her legs while she stays in bed. Ice packs can also help. It's horrible watching them suffer and being so helpless.
