Ichthyoses are a group of inherited skin conditions where the skin becomes thick, scaly, and sometimes inflamed. Experts recently started calling these conditions epidermal differentiation disorders (EDDs), and they come in different types:

  • pEDD: Affects the palms and soles

  • nEDD: Affects the skin only, without other health issues

  • sEDD: Affects the skin and causes problems in other parts of the body

A study by Wang and colleagues found four unrelated people with a new kind of sEDD. These patients had changes in a gene called KLF4, which helps control how skin cells develop and form a protective barrier.
