MONSTERS RUNNING IN FRIENDSWOOD
Annual Monster Dash/Fun Run to benefit rare skin disorder

FRIENDSWOOD, TX (OCTOBER 8, 2013) –  Each of the past 12 years, Dawn Johnson and her family have hosted a Monster Dash/Fun Run 5K race at Friendswood High School, 702 Greenbriar.  Dawn and her army of friends, neighbors, and family members are working tirelessly to create this year’s event being held on October 19, 2013.  This event is a fundraiser for the Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types, Inc. (FIRST).

Dawn’s daughter Jordan is affected with epidermolytic ichthyosis.  Ichthyosis is a family of rare, genetic skin disorders that causes the  skin to become scaly, and crack and peel.  Ichthyosis also prevents the skin from sweating, which can lead to complications from overheating.

“There is no known cure for ichthyosis, only treatments,” said Jean Pickford, Executive Director of FIRST.  “It is our hope that with the funds raised from the Monster Dash, we can continue to conduct more extensive research and provide services to the members of FIRST taking us one step closer to finding a cure and better management of the disorder.  We can’t thank the Johnson family enough for their efforts and support.”

According to FIRST, each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of ichthyosis, of those, approximately 300 are born with a moderate to severe form.  This disease affects people of all ages, races, and gender. The disease usually presents at birth, or within the first year, and continues to affect the patient throughout their lifetime.

Houston Texans fans will be happy to learn that 2 cheerleaders from the franchise will be at the race.  Other sponsors include Smoothie King and Angie’s Cake Balls.

For additional details about the event, visit FIRST’s website,  www.firstskinfoundation.org or email Dawn directly at dawn.johnson@atpx.com.

Dawn and a group of friends and family members recently appeared on Great Day Houston with Deborah Duncan to promote the Monster Dash.
